Psychosomatic Disorder

Psychosomatic Disorder

Though Psychosomatic Disorder seems tough to explain the definition is quite simple. The word “psych” focuses on the mind, while the word “soma” focuses on the body. Psychosomatic Disorder is any physical disease caused by the mind. Stress, depression, and obsessive compulsions often lead to physical diseases such as those of the skin, circulatory system and gastrointestinal tract.

The mind controls heart rate, sweating, nausea, and countless other symptoms using nerve impulses sent by the brain. Common disease like eczema, ulcers, and heart disease can be brought on by these factors but would instead be classified as a Psychosomatic Disorder. CIC or Chronic Idiopathic Constipation is a well-known psychosomatic disorder. Normally when a person has trouble making a bowel movement there is something wrong with their digestive tract however this is not the case for those with CIC.

Those suffering from this psychosomatic disorder do not normally endure physical pain but are still unable to pass stool. It is common for those with CIC to be emotionally stubborn about passing stool. Either they’ve had a traumatic experience involving the bowel or have mixed feelings about this bodily function.
