Self-Care for the Care Provider

cp-featWhen you provide care for others, it’s easy to neglect yourself. That’s why it’s so important to engage in acts of self-care as they benefit the mind, body, and soul. If you don’t want to burn out while tending to the needs of someone else, you must give yourself time to relax, rest, and reflect. Only then, can you give your best self to others.

Creating a self-care ritual takes time and practice. In fact, it may seem very unnatural at first. Keep at it until it becomes a habit. For example, rising 15 minutes earlier in the morning gives many people the time they need to journal, read or even take a brisk walk before the other members of their household wake up.

Think about all the things you love to do. Then find a way to pencil them into your schedule. You may not have hours to write, paint or read but you may have 30 minutes to do so between appointments and other obligations. Make a firm commitment to yourself the way you do others and relish the time you have to do what you love. It’ll improve how you work, interact with others, and live.
